What makes ScouTurf unique from many other websites dedicated to the NFL Draft? We have comprised grading formulas that allocate an overall number grade for a player out of 100, similar to grades you would find playing Madden. This allows us to create a comprehensive Big Board that can be organized by player grade numbers.
Â
Our first 35 points of our evaluation are centered around scouting critical factors, which you can read more about here.
As far as Wide Receivers are concerned, the position trait grading evaluation is comprised of the following, up to 55 total points:
Â
Catching Ability
Up to 15 total points, this is broken down into 3 sections (each up to 5 points):
Â
Concentration
Does he always catch the easy ball? How is his drop rate in general? Does he try to turn upfield early?
Â
In Traffic/Contested
Does the player get "alligator arms" going over the middle of the field? Can he high point balls? Is he a "75/25" WR?
Â
Spectacular Catch
Can the receiver make the Odell Beckham catches that make your jaw drop? Can he get feet in on the boundaries?
Â
Route Running
Up to 15 total points, this is broken down into 3 sections (each up to 5 points):
Â
Release
Can he beat press off the LOS? How quick is he off the line? How quick is he off his breaks?
Â
Precision
Is the player smooth transitioning in and out of cuts? Does he have "wasted" motion? Is he crisp? Can he "sell" double moves?
Â
Route Variety
How advanced is the receivers route tree? Is he only a slant/cross guy at the next level? Just a go-deep vertical guy?Â
Â
Intangibles
Up to 15 total points, this is broken down into 3 sections (each up to 5 points):
Â
Versatility
Is the player one-dimensional in where he lines up? Can he play X, Y, Z receiver? Is he just a slot machine at the next level?
Â
Red Zone Threat
Is the WR a go-to target in the red zone? Strong TD production in college?Â
Â
Run Blocking
How is the receiver's technique in run blocking? Is he willing to throw his body in front of defenders?
Â
Run After Catch
Up to 10Â total points, this is broken down into 2Â sections (each up to 5 points):
Â
Explosiveness
How explosive is the player in space? Can he take it to the house on screens, underneath routes?Â
Â
Return Ability
How capable is the receiver as a returner on special teams?
Â
Â
Each of the above position traits are scored individually out of 5Â total points, totaling up to 55 points for a player evaluation. The grading scale is as follows:
Â
5-Great/Rare
4-Good/Above Average
3-Solid/Average
2-Marginal/Below Average
1-Poor
Lastly, we factor in Maturity (up to 5 points) and Production (up to 5 points) to comprise the 10 points of the player evaluation. Maturity factors in any character issues that have surfaced for a player while in college (failed drug tests, arrest, academic ineligibility, domestic violence, published and verified stories of lack of leadership, etc.). Production factors in how active a player was in accumulating statistics necessary during his career to help differentiate himself among his peers within their Conference or their Team.
