Marcell Ateman is a fifth-year Senior who has appeared in 43 games as an X receiver in Mike Gundy's Spread offense, accruing 146 catches for 2,466 yards (16.9 avg) and 13 TDs, 8 of which he tallied in 2017. Ateman had to take a medical redshirt in 2016 after breaking a bone in his foot that required surgery, and really didn't become an instrumental weapon in the Pokes offense until this past season. Ateman impressed during Senior Bowl week, continuing to show good play strength and ability to pick up an offense and get in sync quickly with different QBs.

Physically, Ateman looks like a Mike Evans clone with strong, long arms and outstanding height and size and surprisingly decent speed. Ateman is a Red Zone weapon who uses his size, leaping ability, long arms and strong hands to pluck the football at the highest point and consistently win match ups against smaller CBs on back corner Fades. Ateman put up solid numbers in Indianapolis and while he does not have elite foot speed, he does well to open pockets of separation with his good agility and lateral control for his size.

Ateman is a fluid route runner on the perimeter and can create subtle separation outside the numbers, notching an impressive 3.52 yards per route run in 2017, per PFF. Ateman plays the WR position like a post player in basketball, showing outstanding body control on back shoulder throws and doing an excellent job of boxing out his defenders and using his wide catch radius to his advantage. Ateman has terrific reactions and can mentally process and adjust his body quickly to catch tipped or deflected passes. Ateman has vice grips for hands and does an outstanding job pairing his concentration with using his elbows to cushion the football upon receiving, and his reliability as a pass catcher is validated in his low 4.76% drop rate. After the catch, prefers dropping his shoulder and using his size to go through a defender rather than submitting to a foot race in open space. Ateman is a vicious run blocker on the perimeter who doesn’t just try to put a hat on CBs, but wants to put them in a body bag.

In October 2016, Ateman and his girlfriend welcomed their first child, who lives with Ateman's girlfriend in Dallas. Ateman is spoken of fondly by his coaches and his teammates describe him as a "positive, funny guy." Although Mike Evans is Ateman's closest comparison physically, he is not the same caliber athlete as Evans and should have a Mack Hollins-type career in the pros. Ateman has an opportunity to develop into a future starter as a possession receiver and should come off the board early in the 3rd round.
